Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time Hymn: 163 Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice Call to worship: Leader: Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, All: so it is with Christ. Opening prayer of confession Gracious God, you have told us what is good; and what you require to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with you. And so we come before you as your children and remember our baptism: Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I do. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior, trusting in his grace and love? I do. Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love? I will, with God’s help. Assurance of Pardon: Remember your baptism and be thankful. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, one God mother of us all. Amen. Although Christ is among us as our peace, we are a people divided against ourselves as we cling to the values of a broken world. The profit and pleasures we pursue lay waste the land and pollute the seas. The fears and jealousies that we harbor set neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation. We abuse your good gifts of imagination and freedom, of intellect and reason, and have turned them into bonds of oppression. Lord, have mercy upon us; heal and forgive us. Set us free to serve you in the world as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ. Assurance of Pardon: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. Hymn: 317 In Christ there is no East or West Opening prayer of confession God of all people, we come before you this day keenly aware of the ways we fall short of your vision for us and for our life together. You tell us how good and pleasant it is when we dwell together in unity, and yet we create division and cultivate disdain. You command us to care for each other, but we send away those crying out for help. You call us and put us together in community, but we want to pick and choose those with whom we associate. Forgive us for thinking we are self-sufficient and independent, rather than utterly dependent upon you and in need of each other. Help us to see ourselves and others as the beloved reflections of the divine we are and give us the grace to treat each other as such. Amen. Assurance of Pardon: God does not reject God’s people.
