Eureka! For the World - Epiphany Sunday

1/8/2023

There are times in our lives when the Epiphany occurs.

Sometimes Jesus comes when we are searching for Him. And we have the Epiphany that Christ is here.

Sometimes Jesus comes unexpectedly when we're not searching for him. He shows up in ways we're not looking for.

Sometimes we respond with joy for Jesus' coming because we're in a place where we can receive him.

And sometimes we respond with fear and anger because we're in a place where we think we're in control.

But no matter how we respond, no matter how Jesus comes in our Epiphany.
Jesus is here.

Ephesians 3:1-12;

A Clean Slate

Jesus saves us from our sins.
He saves us.
He rescues us from the mistakes of our past.

And God delivers us from the prison of the past to the promise of this brand-new year.

And in doing so, God offers us a clean slate
-- a fresh start.

This period of dispiritedness,
this period of sadness,
this period of grief
is a time we are meant to move through.

Jesus will tell us how to get through that longest night.

In Jesus there is life.
In Jesus there is abundant life.
In Jesus there is eternal life.

 - Pat Nabers

Psalm 30:5; Psalm 56:7-8; John 21:4-7, 9, 12

Wars and Peace - Second Sunday of Advent

Stay, friends, brothers, and sisters, in this moment. Remember what God has done.

Keep focused on the hope we have in His Kingdom. For the grass withers, the flower fades, and the leaves are blown from the yard and back.

But God's Word, and God's Kingdom endures forever.

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 65:17-25
Luke 21:5-19

Holding Our Breath - First Sunday of Advent

The decisions you think most important are not to matter at all.
But rather whether or not you decide to mail that letter.
Whether or not you decide to say goodbye or not to say it.
The afternoon you decide to cancel everything and drive out to the beach to watch the tide come in.

These are the moments souls are won or lost, including -- quite possibly -- your own.

Isaiah 2:1-5
Matthew 24:36-44

Doing the Work

Church work is a week long task. it is not simply done on a Sunday morning when we have finished sitting in church. It is more than the once-monthly volunteering.

It is a week-long event. And it happens every week.
It is reading our Bibles.
It is serving others wholeheartedly.
It is praying to and talking with God.

The work is hard. It is uncomfortable.

But we are called to inspire people by the way we live.

Following Jesus is not an insurance policy.
Following Jesus does not insulate us from danger, or suffering, or illness, or even death.
But God is with us in the midst of the suffering.
God is present with us always.

Blessed are the poorest of the poor. Blessed are the spit upon.

This is a hugely radical statement. Jesus is announcing blessings to everything and everyone we don't want to be.

Scripture Readings:
Ephesians 1:11-23
Luke 6:20-31

NOTE: Sound quality is poor. We had to use the backup recording this week.

God says, "I will remember their sin no more."

That's pretty good advice for us.

How many of us live our whole lives nursing that grudge, nursing our childhood hurts?

God chooses to offer forgiveness
God chooses to forget.
God chooses reconciliation.

Jeremiah 31:31-34
John 8:31-36

The Greatest of These

God does not call us to be successful.
God only asks us to be faithful.

God wants us to keep trying to do the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do.
And then leave the results in God's gracious and mighty hands.

 - Denny Burnette

1 Cor. 13:1-13
