Fourth Sunday of Advent - Kids' Stuff

12/24/2023

Picture
Christmas is kids' stuff because it's about the solitary life of one child -- the Holy Child, Jesus. Who turned the world upside down and inside out through the love of God.

Christmas is kids' stuff because it's about how God is transforming you and me through his love into his own merciful children.

 - Denny Burnette

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 9:2-7
Luke 2:1-20

But all of us can do something.
And we have Christ's assurance that when we do our best,
we can count on God to do the rest.

Despite all the unrelenting horrors of the daily headlines, the Kingdom of Heaven is near us, beside us, with us.

Which means that if we Christians are anything at all, we are people of hope.

Isaiah 9:1-4; Matthew 4:12-22

Because God is a global God, we too need to be a global people.

So thinking globally is the first step in carrying out our mission in modeling Christ in all that we are and all that we do.

The second step is to act locally. None of us can do everything. But all of us can do something.
 - Denny Burnette

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 49:1-7; John 1:29-42

Wars and Peace - Second Sunday of Advent

Stay, friends, brothers, and sisters, in this moment. Remember what God has done.

Keep focused on the hope we have in His Kingdom. For the grass withers, the flower fades, and the leaves are blown from the yard and back.

But God's Word, and God's Kingdom endures forever.
 - Andy Meyers

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 65:17-25
Luke 21:5-19

Holding Our Breath - First Sunday of Advent

The decisions you think most important are not to matter at all.
But rather whether or not you decide to mail that letter.
Whether or not you decide to say goodbye or not to say it.
The afternoon you decide to cancel everything and drive out to the beach to watch the tide come in.

These are the moments souls are won or lost, including -- quite possibly -- your own.

 - Denny Burnette

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 2:1-5
Matthew 24:36-44

Law and Order

See, Jesus doesn't ignore the Law. He fulfills the Law. For Him, the Law isn't about checking the boxes.

It's about bringing grace and mercy into this world.

The Law doesn't have the last word. The Law must bend to compassion and love.

 - Pat Nabers

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 59:9b-14
Luke 13:10-17

Getting on the Same Page

Let's all get on the same page about what Jesus stands for.

Jesus stands for breaking the mold. He doesn't blindly accept society as it is. He shows through word and deed what could be.

Jesus stands for the ones who have been pushed aside. The peacemakers, the merciful, the meek, who are rejected as weak. The persecuted who are run over. The hungry and thirsty who are ignored.

And Jesus invites us all into a new way of living.

 - Erin Toler

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 61:1-9
Matthew 5:1-12

We can build houses for the homeless
We can bring food to the hungry
We can help those living with addiction

"Return to your home and declare how much God has done for you."

And we ask God to help us.

Isaiah 65:1-9
Luke 8:26-39

We might be parting, but this is not the end. Jesus' final act of love makes all things new.
Because our Savior lives we can live free from the fear of finality.

We can live knowing that the things we do count, because we live in the glory of the Risen One.
 - Pastor Rebekah
