Jesus saves us from our sins.
He saves us.
He rescues us from the mistakes of our past.

And God delivers us from the prison of the past to the promise of this brand-new year.

And in doing so, God offers us a clean slate
-- a fresh start.

Wars and Peace - Second Sunday of Advent

Stay, friends, brothers, and sisters, in this moment. Remember what God has done.

Keep focused on the hope we have in His Kingdom. For the grass withers, the flower fades, and the leaves are blown from the yard and back.

But God's Word, and God's Kingdom endures forever.
 - Andy Meyers

Isaiah 65:17-25
Luke 21:5-19

Doing the Work

Church work is a week long task. it is not simply done on a Sunday morning when we have finished sitting in church. It is more than the once-monthly volunteering.

It is a week-long event. And it happens every week.
It is reading our Bibles.
It is serving others wholeheartedly.
It is praying to and talking with God.

The work is hard. It is uncomfortable.

But we are called to inspire people by the way we live.

 - Brittney Daniel

2 Thessalonians 3: 6-13

Following Jesus is not an insurance policy.
Following Jesus does not insulate us from danger, or suffering, or illness, or even death.
But God is with us in the midst of the suffering.
God is present with us always.

Malachai 4:1-2b
Luke 21:5-19

Justice!

Sometimes I ask the question is God is so righteous and God is so just, how come he's so slow?
But our faithfulness in waiting is because we've read the last chapter. We know that no matter how long the wait, on the last day we have received the sure and certain promise of resurrection to life eternal.
 - Pat Nabers

Scripture Readings:

Gen. 32:22-32; Luke 18:1-8

Looking or Seeing?

Jesus gives us the promise of eternal life.
But how do we live this life now?
How do we use our riches now?
How do we see those deserving our care now?
How do we give them the attention and fellowship now?
Jesus wants to shape our lives so that we would have a meaningful and joyful life now.

Scripture Readings:
Amos 6:1a, 4-7
Luke 16, 19-31

Maybe -- just maybe -- Jesus is saying that rules are meant to be broken
when it benefits people;
when lives are saved;
when community is formed;
when wealth is shared;
when love abides;
when grace and mercy abound.

 - Pat Nabers

1 Timothy, 2:1-7
Luke 16:1-13

Stuff

The pursuit of stuff has become a national obsession. We are having smaller families and building bigger houses.
Why do we need these bigger houses?
We need a place to put our stuff!

It is only Christ who can deliver us from greed and commercial addictions. He invites us into an enduring life-liberating love. May we find ourselves walking in love as Christ loved us, and thereby discover the fulfillment of God's eternal promise.

 - Norris John

Scripture Readings:
Jeremiah 18-1:11; Psalm 139 1-6, 13-18; Philemon 1:21; Luke 14:25-33, 15:48-16:47

Sometimes we think coming to church is about us.
We want the familiar hymns.
We want to see our family and friends.
We think it's about being comforted.

But Jesus says no.
When you leave this building, you are entering your mission field.

 - Pat Nabers

See, Jesus doesn't ignore the Law. He fulfills the Law. For Him, the Law isn't about checking the boxes.

It's about bringing grace and mercy into this world.

The Law doesn't have the last word. The Law must bend to compassion and love.

 - Pat Nabers

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 59:9b-14
Luke 13:10-17
