Third Sunday of Easter Hymn: 645 Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above Call to worship (based on Psalm 96) O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless God’s name; tell of God’s salvation from day today. Declare God’s glory among the nations, God’s marvelous works among all the peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; The Holy One is to be revered above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Honor and majesty are before God; strength and beauty are in God’s sanctuary. O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Opening prayer of confession Gracious God, who made heaven and earth and all this is in the earth, we praise you. We give you thanks for the creation you untrusted to us. We give you thank for the beauty of the earth. Yet, too often we forget this call to serve. We forget that we have been tasked with tending your creation and loving your created beings. Forgive us. Remind us of our calling and guide us into loving and serving your world. (Silent prayer) Amen. Assurance of Pardon We have been created in love. We have been forgiven in love. Thanks be to God. Sunday Worship for April 12, 2020
Easter Sunday Call to worship O Christ, in your resurrection, the heavens and the earth rejoice. Alleluia! By your resurrection, you broke open the gates of hell and destroyed sin and death. Keep us victorious over sin. By your resurrection, you raised the dead and brought us from death to life. Guide us in the way of eternal life. By your resurrection, you confounded your guards and executioners and filled the disciples with joy. Give us joy in your service. By your resurrection, you proclaimed the good news to the women and apostles and brought salvation to the whole world. Direct our lives as your new creation. Opening prayer of confession Almighty God, in raising Jesus from the grave, you shattered the power of sin and death. We confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We overlook the poor and the hungry, and pass by those who mourn; we are deaf to the cries of the oppressed, and indifferent to calls for peace; we despise the weak, and abuse the earth you made. Forgive us, God of mercy. Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the joy of life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. (Silent prayer) Amen. Assurance of Pardon The one who lived for us, the one who died for us, the one who rose for us, forgives us and makes us one! Thanks be to God. Palm Sunday Call to worship Just as Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey so long ago Jesus enters our hearts this day Let us join in worship: Hosanna Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Opening prayer of confession Gracious God, our hearts are heavy this morning. As we enter into Holy Week, we long to be together. We miss our neighbors, we miss our community. We mourn for the sick, we mourn for the whole world. Merciful God, forgive us when we forget about our neighbor. Forgive us when we stew in anger. Remain with us in our grief and remind us that we are not alone. (Silent confession) Amen. Assurance of Pardon Though we remain distant, we are one in Christ Jesus. Through the grace of Jesus, know that you are forgive and be at peace. Thanks be to God. Hymn 552 Holy Holy Holy Scripture reading Matthew 21:1-11 Reflection Apostle’s creed Prayers of the people and the Lord's Prayer Offering Benediction Hymn 227 Jesus Remember Me Call to worship Lord, we come crying to you from the depths. We come bearing our souls and awaiting your response. We wait in hope, knowing that you promise to hear and provide. Opening prayer of confession Friends, today is a Sunday for refreshment, a time of Sabbath relief in the midst of this challenging Lent. Believing God’s promise of forgiveness, let us rejoice in the gift of confession. Let us pray together: God of all that is, seen and unseen, when you ask us if dry bones can live, we are skeptical, wary of looking foolish preaching to the long-dead and unsure that your Spirit is really enough to bring sinew and breath to places of loss and desolation. Forgive our lack of trust and help us to proclaim your life-giving power with courage, no matter the circumstances. Silence in us any voice but yours until that time when Christ returns and death and crying and mourning are no more. (Silent prayer) Amen. Assurance of Pardon Hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with God is great power to redeem. It is the Lord who will redeem us from all its iniquities. Friends, believe the Good News, through Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God! Amen!
