Celebrate the Gifts of Women Sunday - March 9

Celebrate WomenTheme: Celebrate the Young Women Within

On Sunday, March 9, we will celebrate the gifts of women. We have invited a special speaker, Katherine Nguyen, to be with us to preach. The Presbyterian Women of Orange Presbyterian Church will lead other parts of the service. The coffee fellowship time will be hosted by one of the circles.

Katherine Nguyen is the Assistant Director of Camp Hanover and started her work in the summer of 2007. She says that it was growing up in church camp that she first experienced the freedom and joy of Christ, and it was there that she first felt God’s call on her life to go into ministry. Katherine began working at Camp Hanover during her summers at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA.

Since graduating with her Masters of Divinity in 2002, Katherine has served alongside her husband in youth and young adult ministries in Florida and Louisiana. She brings to her work at Camp Hanover and the Presbytery of the James her gifts in ministry, hospitality, communication, and art/marketing.

In 1993 The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) took action to designate a “Celebrate the Gifts of Women” Sunday and it appears in the Presbyterian Planning Calendar each year on the Sunday closest to March 8, International Women’s Day.

Thanks from Logos!

Thanks so much to everyone who helped with our Logos program for four Tuesday afternoons in February! The younger children learned about God, prayed, sang, made crafts, and participated in group activities. The older youth spent the afternoons with several adults at the Love Outreach Food Pantry.

Thanks to everyone who helped teach, lead worship skills, donated food, cooked in the kitchen, prayed and played.    We had a great time.

One Great Hour of Sharing - March 23

So what is One Great Hour of Sharing? If you’re like many of us, it’s one of those traditions you think everyone else understands, so you don’t ask. And a tradition it is - many congregations will receive the offering for the sixtieth time this year.

It started in 1949, and over the years, the offering’s mission has grown from simply emergency relief and rebuilding after disasters such as wars, earthquakes, and floods to addressing many kinds of human suffering, from the sudden to the chronic.

The offering continues the tradition it has maintained throughout its history - standing with our partners in the face of suffering, walking with them toward a more hopeful future, and witnessing to the love of God in Jesus Christ in tangible ways that proclaim in word and deed that they are not alone. We invite you to join this great tradition of sharing resources that truly changes lives. We will receive the offering on Easter Sunday.

A The Ups and Downs of March

March is one of the most unusual months - the weather can be spring-like one day and a snow storm can tear through the next. And get ready - the period of time we observe Daylight Savings Time has been lengthened so that we’ll spring forward the second weekend of March.

It’s also in March that I look forward to those college athletes dribbling the basketball up and down the court. I’ll print off the brackets for both the women’s and the men’s March madness.

And then...this year because of the way the calendar falls, we experience the ups and downs of our faith journey. We begin March deep into Lent following Jesus on his final trip to Jerusalem. We quickly move into Holy Week with special services to recount again Jesus’ final days. On Thursday evening, March 20, we’ll gather in the sanctuary to observe the institution of the Lord’s Supper as we recall Jesus’ last supper with his disciples in the upper room. There is a time of somber reflection as we remember Jesus’ final hours. The sanctuary will then be stripped of all its symbols and we will leave in silence.

Then on Easter Sunday morning, March 23, we will joyfully celebrate the resurrection of our Lord! The sadness is replaced with joy. The purple paraments are put away and out comes the white - it’s time to celebrate new life, resurrection, and hope.

One thing I know - in the midst of all the ups and downs of life, of all the sorrows and the celebrations - God is with us.

Thanks be God!
Denise

Preschool Corner

Preschool

Although this year is a leap year, February in the preschool was a very short month, due to several “snow days” and Orange County “no school” days.

Much of our time was spent on Valentine activities. The younger class has worked on shapes and the older class has been focused on kindergarten skills. Both groups have been introduced to our new Zoophonics program. The first week of March we will have our class pictures taken. We will also celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

Enrollment for next year will begin in March as well. Please send anyone our way who might be interested!

 Preschool Director

Hebrance Scholarship

The Joseph A. Hebrance Scholarship was established by the family of Mr. Hebrance upon his death in 1985 to provide financial assistance for two deserving students in the church family who are continuing their education after high school, either in college or in trade school. These awards are made directly to the scholarship winner’s school.

Applicants should submit a one-page typed essay which includes the following:

  • A description of your future educational plans.
  • A description of your activities within the community.
  • A description of how the church and church family influenced your life and goals.

Please send this essay to the church office no later than April 1, 2007.
If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Sherwin at 672-5574.

Mission Opportunities…Spring and Summer

Why go on a mission trip? Talk to anyone in our church who has been on a mission trip and see what they tell you. A mission trip will stretch you and possibly change your life. When you go with an open heart, you will learn and see other ways of loving and serving our God…and you will bring those new found insights home to Orange Presbyterian Church and to our community.

There are three up-coming mission trips this spring and summer. All are sponsored by District 1 churches, Charlottesville, of the Presbytery of the James. We have been invited to participate. Following is some very brief information on each of the three trips. You can get additional information from either our church office or from Cindy Reid (cindy_reid@woodberry.org

1) Katrina Rebuilding: New Orleans, May 4-10
Registration forms returned to Olivet Presbyterian by March 24.
                        Ages 16 and up

2) Mexico Mission: Reynosa, June 29-July 5
Registration forms returned to Olivet Presbyterian by March 30
Inter-generational: Rising 10th graders and up
Rising 6th-9th graders with participating family member

3) Appalachian Mission: Clinch Co., VA, July 20-26
Registration forms returned to Olivet Presbyterian by June 1st
Inter-generational:  Rising 10th graders and up
Rising 6th-9th graders with participating adult family member

A mission trip is an opportunity to serve God’s people where they are…whether that’s in New Orleans, Mexico, or Southwest Virginia. If you feel called to work and serve outside our immediate community, check out these opportunities. “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”

Presbyterian Men Seek Funding for Project

On February 7, 2008 the Presbyterian Men presented a proposal to the Property Committee to provide lighting and a ceiling in the basement of the sanctuary building.  The proposal, which calls for the Presbyterian Men to provide the bulk of the labor, was approved by the Property Committee and, on February 21, received the blessing of the Session.

One donor, a member of the Presbyterian Men, has agreed to match $1500 given to this project.

Please lend your financial support to this effort which will benefit the music program, the preschool program, and countless other endeavors. Checks can be made payable to the Presbyterian Men and the memo line should indicate the funds are to be used for the Ceiling/Lighting Project. Checks may be given to Bill Chapman, Rod McLeod, or Fred Lourenzo.

We will plan on reporting back to the Session concerning the monies from the congregation that have been contributed to this effort, our attempts to find local vendors, and the our progress on the permit and electrical fronts.

By His Grace,
Roderick McLeod

Easter Lilies

If you would like to place a lily in the sanctuary on Easter Sunday, March 23, please make arrangements to have your Easter lily delivered or placed in the sanctuary  by 10:00 am on Saturday, March 22, and turn in your completed lily information sheet to the church office. Lily sheets will be in the church bulletin and in the narthex.                                     Anne Somervill
