OPC Mission Trip to New Orleans
November 11 - 18, 2006

Out of chaos...hope. That's the slogan for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and it was apt for this week. We worked hard and all our work was a small drop in a large ocean of woe, but we knew from the people we met that we had brought hope. Homeowners, neighbors, people who were driving by, ...just about everyone we saw...they said thank you for coming, for remembering us.

The trip down and first day of work
Tuesday we worked on two houses
Wednesday we started the big house
Thursday we emptied the house, mostly
Friday worked more and left the house for next weeks crew

Friday -- Our last day (for now) in New Orleans. If you look back at the pics from Wednesday, you'll see what Miss Alice's house looked like before we tackled the yard.

Although the house looks much, much better on the outside, much interior work remains. We found a huge termite nest over the front door, with resultant damage throughout the door frame & into other rooms.

Given the age and health of Miss Alice, we don't know if she will ever really be able to return here to live. All we could do was help give her some options, so that she could decide the fate of her house for herself. We were able to find a few "treasures" for Miss Alice to start her life over again wherever that might be.

Yuck, yuck, triple yuck. The shower in the background had about 4" of hurricane water & piles of sodden clothes. The smell was difficult to bear. Anne is shown here doing the dirty work.

Jack is using brute strength to get through the plaster & underlying lathe. The baseboards were so difficult to remove, we think they must have been heart pine.

A view of the kitchen before we really got down to work.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Here we have the gutted kitchen.

Gene, the Energizer Bunny...he just keeps on going! and going! and going!!

Day is done...gone the sun (almost). We had to call it quits at this point, clean up our mess and leave. We hope another group will come to help Miss Alice and her family with the rest of the house.

One of the treasures Dianne found...the wedding ring that belonged to Miss Alice's husband. If we had not tackled that awful bathroom, we would never have found this.

The termites set up shop here over this lovely old arched doorway. From there, they could go straight up the beam to the roof supports. A short commute to work each day.

Pod sweet pod (home sweet home). Home to Cindy, Anne & Dianne this week.

Chilly mornings and cold nights, but Margaret (and all of us, of course) managed to brush our teeth thoroughly.

Mini field trip to the sugar cane field....

Sweet!
